Weekend Round-Up – 8 to 10 November

10th November 2024
admin

This weekend is Remembrance weekend.

On Remembrance Sunday, we unite behind our Armed Forces community and honour those who gave their lives for our freedom. We remember the sacrifice of the Armed Forces community from United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. We pay tribute to the special contribution of families and of the emergency services. We think of those who fell liberating Europe on D-Day and we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country in the conflicts before and since.

Before each of the games there will be a minutes silence to mark the occasion. Below is one of the most hopeful silences that took place

…At the going down of the sun, and in the morning. We will remember them.

Middlesbrough U13 0 – 30  Guisborough

Under 13’s had their first Friday night lights experience against a well drilled and large Guisborough squad.

In a hard fought and physical encounter the Boro forwards got through a monumental amount of work in both attack and defence. Guisborough’s strong running full back and excellent link up in the half backs produced some fantastic attack and broke Boro’s defence to go a couple of tries ahead.

The second half saw Boro again producing some excellent phases of play with backs and forwards linking up for some amazing attacking play. However, the strong defence and experience from Guisborough meant Boro couldn’t find a way to cross the line. Guisborough continued their strong running and capitalised on turn over ball and strong attack to score a couple of fluid running tries. Although the result may have been disappointing for Boro the performance was testament to the whole squad.

Middlesbrough 1st XV  36 – 7  Aspatria

On Remembrance weekend we entertain Aspatria in our latest Regional 2 North League game.

After an impeccable minutes silence the game kicks off with the Cumbrians playing down the slope. Boro’s first attack sees the ball fed along the backs after drives from Ollie Hodgson and Myles Colvin, it ends up in points machine Brendan Hill’s hands and he turns on his afterburners to scoot round the opposition and score under the posts. His conversion is good 7-0.

Boro were awarded a free kick after some shenanigans at scrum time. Don’t ask me what goes on in there; I propped my whole career and still have no clue. Hodgson taps and goes from No 8. His big run sets up Aedan Moloney who has a bash at the defenders, tying them in to allow Hill to score out wide 12-0.

Great defence from Boro sees Aspatria spill the ball. This is hacked on from the ground and recovered by Big Fin Magowan. The game then moves side to side, then towards the post and scrum Half Conner Foley snipes over the line to score. Hill adds the extras 19-0.

Full Back Matthew Marsay then has a good run that sets up Hill for his Hat Trick try to make it Boro 24 Aspatria 0 at the break.

After the half-time oranges Boro start well again and a chip through from Fly Half, Shay Barritt is gathered by Hill and ball to Moloney to score Hill adds yet another con. 31-0.

Special mention to Josh Lynas and Joe Sawdon who kept their star prop in check the whole game.

Aspatria score the next try from a driving maul, the blind side is left wide open and their Hooker scores 31-7.

One of the visiting back row players then leaves the field saying that he has been hit in his family jewels. A few minutes later I pass by him and he has an ice pack on the back of his neck, I’m no doctor but…

Replacement wing Rhys Kilbride then bounces off 5 would be defenders and extends his hand out to score. The referee’s vision is impeded and by the time he gets in position the ball has gone forward. As he can only award what he can see, he has no option but to disallow the try. However, Kilbride is not to be denied and the next opportunity he bounces off a defender, fends away another, and with the ball clutched tightly to his chest he dives over the line to score.

FT Boro 36 Aspatria 7

This result keeps us on the top of Regional 2 North a point ahead of Northern with Morpeth and West Hartlepool close behind.

Ripon 38 – 12 Middlesbrough A

Middlesbrough ‘A’ Team travelled down to ‘international’ Ripon on Saturday to play in a friendly arranged late last season. They faced a big side with a lot of our southern hemisphere friends in the opposing side. Listening to some of the tales on their return, you would be forgiven if you walked away thinking Fiji were warming up for their Wales encounter on Sunday.

Despite the huge opposition the lads stuck at it and walked off with a loss, but a couple of tries and lot of pride. They also had plenty of smiles and cheer on their return to Acklam Park; showing why rugby is the greatest game.

Middlesbrough U14 30 – 12 Hartlepool

The under 14 team also showed their respect to those fallen…

Boro U14s Prevail Over Hartlepool Old Boys in a High-Energy Match at Acklam Park.

In a thrilling encounter at Acklam Park, Boro U14s claimed victory over Hartlepool Old Boys with a final score of 30-12. The game lived up to its promise of speed, physicality, and intensity as both teams moved the ball well and set a fast pace from the start.

Boro opened the scoring with an impressive dummy and burst of speed by Will Foster. Hartlepool responded swiftly with a try and conversion to keep things even. Before halftime, Jack Smith extended Boro’s lead with a powerful run through multiple defenders, scoring in the corner to make it 15-7.

The second half saw both teams battling fiercely in the rucks and mauls. Fly-half Christian Boyes added another try for Boro, but Hartlepool quickly responded, narrowing the gap and pushing the intensity even further. Boro then demonstrated their skill and strength in attack, with additional tries from Archie Brent, a second from Boyes and Harry Thompson securing a well-deserved win.

Jack Meadows was awarded Player of the Match by sponsor Joe Thompson, while Charlie Evans earned Unsung Hero for his impactful debut on the wing. Boro will face Pocklington next at home on Sunday, November 17, with an 11 a.m. kickoff.
